What is hair loss dual action treatment?
Finasteride and Regaine are both hair loss treatments that are proven to slow and reverse hair loss in different ways. Regaine is designed to tackle hair loss and thinning hair by increasing blood flow to hair follicles which stimulates hair growth.
Meanwhile Finasteride, an oral medication decreases the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone responsible for hair thinning. Together these treatments provide a more effective treatment solution for male hair loss.
How do I use finasteride and Regaine?
To use Finasteride
- Take one 1mg tablet daily
- Can be taken with or without food
- Take at the same time each day
To use Regaine foam:
- Wash your hands before applying the foam
- Part your hair to expose the scalp,
- Ensure your scalp is dry
- Dispense about half a capful of foam
- Rub the foam into your scalp and gently massage it throughout the affected area
- Wash your hands thoroughly after applying
- Don’t’ use more than twice a day – using more won’t work faster and increases the chances of side effects
For best results:
- Use the recommended dosage, twice a day for men
- Allow the foam to air dry before styling your hair
- Use consistently to see results

How does dual action hair growth medication work?
Finasteride
Finasteride blocks type II 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Lowering DHT in the scalp slows follicle shrinkage and allows thicker hair to grow.
Minoxidil
Minoxidil is the active ingredient in Regaine the exact mechanism of how minoxidil stimulates hair growth is not fully understood. It’s believed to work by widening the blood vessels in the scalp, which increases blood flow to the hair follicles. The improvement in blood circulation delivers more oxygen, blood, and nutrients to the hair follicles, which revitalises shrunken hair follicles, increasing their size, and prolongs their growth phase.
Another theory is that minoxidil opens potassium channels in the cells, by opening these channels, minoxidil may help to normalise the hair follicle’s growth cycle, allowing more follicles to move into the active growth phase.
How effective are Finasteride and Regaine together?
In a 12-month study of 450 men, 94% of those using finasteride and 5% minoxidil together showed improvement, compared with 80.5% on finasteride alone and 59% on minoxidil alone. A 2020 review of randomised trials found combination treatment worked better than either treatment alone, with a similar side-effect profile.
When to avoid taking Regaine and Finasteride combination
- Don’t take these treatments if you’re allergic to any of the ingredients in Finasteride or Regaine (topical Minoxidil)
- Finasteride isn’t licensed for women and mustn’t be taken if you’re pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as handling crushed or broken Finasteride tablets can affect the development of an unborn baby.
- Treatment is not suitable for those under the age of 18

How long does it take to work?
Stabilisation of hair loss can be expected after 3-6 months of consistent use, after 12 months you should notice clear signs of hair regrowth. Peak hair growth will occur after 2 years of consistent use, but treatment must be continued to maintain results.
These treatments aren’t a quick fix, so you need to be patient to see progress. If you stop using the treatment, then the effects begin to reverse after 6 months of stopping treatment.
Alternatives to Regaine and Finasteride combination
If our Regaine and Finasteride combination treatment is not suitable for you or you’d prefer a different treatment, there are other effective treatments available:
- Oral Minoxidil — a low-dose daily tablet, by prescription.
- Dutasteride — a stronger DHT-blocker, sometimes used when finasteride alone isn’t enough.
