What is Regaine Solution?
Regaine Extra Strength solution is a hair loss treatment that is applied directly to the scalp which improves blood flow to hair follicles on the scalp so that the size and thickness of these hair follicles increase.
How does Regaine work?
Regaine Solution Extra Strength contains 5% Minoxidil which works by widening blood vessels and opening potassium channels, this provides more oxygen, blood, and nutrients to the hair follicles. This process encourages hair regrowth and helps slow down hair loss.
Who can use Regaine?
Regaine is appropriate for men aged 18 to 65 who have male pattern baldness or hair thinning. It’s not for sudden, patchy or unexplained hair loss, an inflamed or damaged scalp.
You need to complete an online assessment to ensure you’re suitable for the treatment.
How do I use Regaine?
- Ensure your hair and scalp are completely dry before using Regaine.
- Apply 1ml of the solution to the affected areas of the scalp twice a day
- Leave at least 12 hours between uses
- Wash your hands thoroughly after applying it
How effective is Regaine?
Regaine 5% solution has been proven to reduce hair loss and promote hair regrowth in clinical trials. A clinical trial found that those treated with Regaine 5% solution had 45% more hair regrowth than those using 2% minoxidil solution after 48 weeks.
What are the side effects?
Increase hair shedding may happen within the first 6 weeks of treatment, as the resting hairs become active the older hairs are pushed out to allow the new hair follicles to grow.
Side effects include:
Very common: headache
Common: itching, rash or dermatitis, unwanted hair growth outside the scalp, chest pain
Uncommon: dizziness, palpitations, shortness of breath, nausea
If you experience chest pain, a rapid heartbeat, faintness, dizziness, unexplained weight gain, swelling of the hands or feet or persistent redness/irritation of the scalp then stop using Regaine immediately and contact us. (should they contact us or go their GP?)
When can I expect to see results with Regaine?
Results may vary but clinical studies have shown that it can take up to 8 weeks to see noticeable improvements in hair growth. Hair regrowth is a slow process, the British Association of Dermatologists states that it can take between 6 to 12 months to see the full benefits of the treatment. Regaine is not guaranteed to work for everyone, if it’s not working for you then contact us and we’ll advise you on alternative treatments.
Can I use Regaine alongside other hair loss treatments?
Regaine can be combined with Propecia, Finasteride or Dutasteride because they work differently to Regaine, they prevent testosterone converting to DHT, which is the hormone involved in male-pattern hair loss. Alternatives to Regaine
If dutasteride 0.5mg is suitable for you or you’d prefer a different treatment, there are other effective treatments available:
- Finasteride 1mg — the only oral treatment licensed in the UK for male pattern hair loss; blocks Type II 5-alpha-reductase.
- Oral Minoxidil — a low-dose daily tablet, by prescription.
- Hair Loss Dual Action — combination products that pair a DHT blocker with minoxidil for a two-pronged approach.
- Dutasteride — a stronger DHT-blocker, sometimes used when finasteride alone isn’t enough.

Can I stop using Regaine once I see results?
We recommend you continue to use Regaine to maintain your results, if you stop treatment any new hair growth may be lost gradually.
How long does a bottle of Regaine extra strength last?
A 60ml bottle provides 30 days of treatment when used twice a day.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
Wait till you’re next scheduled to use it and continue as normal, do not apply twice the amount to make up for the missed dose.
Can I wash and style my hair while using Regaine?
Yes, you can, wash your hair first then let your scalp dry completely before applying Regaine.
For styling products like hair gel or hairspray apply them after Regaine has dried completely or it could interfere with the solution and reduce its effectiveness.
